I finally cracked a smile and honestly had some enjoyment just now. I think I even had fun for the first time in WAR! What managed to get me to smile, you ask?
I was ganked!
I’d just finished yet another ass-whooping in the Nordenwatch scenario and was queued up for another so I decided to go exploring and perhaps work another PvE quest or few. I ended up in a whole map with the town of New Emskrank which was flagged for RvR. Finally, I get to see some of this much-lauded open world RvR. I saw an open raid, so I joined but everyone was just meandering around, no fighting. I saw a couple items flashing, which turned out to be quest objectives for the “Sacking of New Emskrank” quest. As I walked over to click the item — BAM! — out of nowhere some goody two-shoes foofoo Order jumped out of stealth and waylaid me. While he laughed at my vulnerability, thinking he’d found an easy target (I’m sure I deserve a “Gank Me, I Suck” title, but I don’t think Mythic has added it to my account yet) he found himself the object of a painful gang-gank from my raid-mates.
Maybe there’s something to this open RvR stuff after all…
Sadly, I think Draevus will be parked for now. I think my disappointment from my expectations and assumptions of what the class would be in contrast to what it is (so far) has created such a disconnect between me and the character that I’m wondering if that isn’t part of why I haven’t been enjoying WAR. What I wanted was my Dread Knight, reimagined in the WAR universe. What I got was an ugly Black Defias reject. Cool auras aside, I didn’t come to WAR to play a human, even if he’s a nasty and ugly human. I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming while I reload WAR to roll up a Black Orc…

Lol @ the lol for being ganked. I got ganked at rank 5 by a rank 11 and my team (all rank 6 and below) managed to take him down with some clever snares and ranged damage. It was then that I released ganking in WAR isn’t going to be as big a problem as it was in WoW.
Smart move on rolling a new char. It took me a few goes to work out which char was for me. I have three now: Witch Hunter, Warrior Priest and Arch Mage. The Arch Mage is definitely the most fun.
Sounds like you’re warming up to WAR? Hows the pro list looking?
The Chosen is a little more dependent than other tanks on having a healer around. A Black Ork gets an self buff that has a chance to proc a heal on himself. He also gets some defensive target buffs like Weapon Skill increases (reduces the effectiveness of your opponent’s armor) and a self armor (or toughness?) buff if you’ve got a shield up. Both do damage to your offensive target.
I think the keystrokes might drive you a little bonkers. Black Orks build up to their higher abilities. They open, follow up and finish. If you open, follow up and open again your finish won’t be available until you follow up again then finish. There is an icon over your hotkey bar that changes to show which one you’re in. It refers to “Gud Plan” and “Bestest Plan” or something like that.
I found it was a lot of 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3… Until you get some of the other abilities.
A Black Ork with a healer behind him can be a fearsome combination. I suspect you’ll run into character/model collision issues like you did with the Chosen because the Black Ork is so huge. I found the Goblin models almost never seem to get caught on others… though maybe that’s just the nature of a Goblin Shaman being a ranged healer/DPS type.
Really, the Shaman was my favorite class of them all. DPS, buffs and heals… oh my!
Good to see you’re enjoying it a little more.
TIP: for tanks you’re going to want Toughness and Strength. You’ll also want Corporeal and Elemental Resistances (most common damage types). Weapon Skill is okay, but not at the cost of base DPS numbers.
Yes, I’m a min/maxer and I love analyzing systems… preferable of the gaming variety.
Hi there.
Just wanted to add couple of things.
First – the mean of RvR term is very simple – WHO limits your PvP by race/side of the players you can fight. So you can’t fight against your side. And this allows all servers to be split by two, and you can just walk into open RvR area and you know who are your enemies and who will help you.
And another thing I wanted to add… Try play engineer. I’ve tried some other classes, but they are just not half fun as engy. So, if you will have time and feel like alting – try engy, cause he’s challenging (cause he’s not very strong class atm) and fun.
Expect Engineers to get some nerfs on their turrets, namely firing through walls, ceilings and floors. The LOS code doesn’t apply to them and that HAS to be wrong.
I’m doing fine with the Black Orc’s combat system because it’s identical to LOTRO’s minstrel. I choose a Tier 1 ballad and Tier 2 opens up, then Tier 3, and so on. However, that works perfectly fine in LOTRO because I’m only doing PvE. So far, I’ve only done PvE with the Black Orc too. I queued up for whatever the scenario orcs get in their starter zone but I stayed in the queue for hours and it never activated. I am very concerned about trying to pull off that combat system while in melee PvP, though.
If I’m unable to find a groove with the melee PvP then the only two classes I was ever interested in become useless to me.
I’ve grouped with a couple shaman now, and they do seem cool. But I’m sick to death of old-school progress bar casting. Do they have to stand still or can they cast while moving?
The other problem is while talking with the people I’m grouping with for PvE and PQ’s, *no one* has been enthusiastic about the game. All I’m seeing so far is comments of disappointment and boredom, which echo my own feelings.

I can think of a couple hundred people who are…
It sucks if you spent 50 bucks on a game that you end up not liking, but them’s the breaks. What’s worse about MMOGs though is that you usually can’t trade them in unless your game store has total idiots working the counter.
I have a handful of MMOs I know I’ll never subscribe to again… just collecting dust.
Still, if you’ve had ANY fun with the game at all, it’s good to always have back up MMOs for when you want a change of pace. It’s why EQ2, LotRO, and TR are still installed on my machine though I haven’t really played them in ages.
I still maintain that 90% of the fun in WAR is being in an active and decently sized guild. And I’m hearing that’s how life was in DAoC as well.
I think I’m kinda getting the swing of WAR, but I’m thinking it’s all in the guild. It really isn’t very fun at all solo. In any other game, I’m perfectly ok soloing and just chatting with the guild, hoping for a group at some point but entertained enough to keep at it nonetheless while solo. That hasn’t been the case in WAR. But, now that I’m noticing that, maybe it’s time to give someone on CoW Destruction a call for an invite. Once I figure out who I’m supposed to ask…
And yeah, I know the feeling about “never again” MMO’s. For me it’s EQ2 and probably AoC too. I don’t get *that* feeling about WAR at all, so that’s a plus.
@Troll: not that I expect you’ll see this, but the least you could have done was let me know what exactly the dead horse was. Besides, sometimes they feign death then run away when no one’s looking, so it’s always best to make sure…
Oh well, can’t please everyone and I’m not about to jump on the “zomg WAR is teh b3st3st MMO evar!” bandwagon.
Be sure to sign up for CoW before tonight, Scott. Apps are closing at midnight EST I believe.
You need a referral though… and someone I know there was sending you from talking to you here… not sure who…
(Not implying myself, seriously can’t remember who it was that was acting as your referral… maybe Oakstout?)
Um… I joined CoW on the website and was accepted like a month or so ago? I just have been avoiding joining the guild in-game until I got a feel for how things were on their own without an awesome guild swaying my opinion.
Or do I need a referral to get invited even though I’m “in” on the forums? /confused
Oh, didn’t realize you were already a “guild member”. Easy to lose track with this many folks.
In that case, just find an officer online, and ask for an invite. You will need a password if in chat, different for each Realm. Or just hop on Vent and ask for one there.
All of this info can be found on the Guild Plans and Announcements section.
Yeah I was in IRC with them yesterday when you first mentioned that so I whined “Bildo says I need a referral but my name is orange on the forums! Waawaawaa!”
Got it all straightened out and I put Tukeela in the guild yesterday and ran with a few of them last night, that’s how I learned WAR won’t release the ‘v’ keybind even though it’s unset in the keybind options. So I just listened on Ventrilo instead of having them listen to me spewing forth a stream of obscenities.
And seriously… is “Tukeela” really *that* difficult to say? It’s rather phonetic if you ask me but they kept calling me Tuleekula. Is that like Caligula? Maybe they were just staunch supporters of President Nucular?
Scott you are one crabby dude lately!
GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!!!!!

Ooooooh… rainbows are purty…
I’m actually in a great mood today. I also didn’t touch WAR today. Related? Hahahahaha! Actually the main reason I didn’t play was it’s so incredibly dependent on having other players there, and I’ve already seen that WAR is no different than anything else in the sense that weekday mornings and afternoons are extremely low population times.
