Pumping Irony

Being ever the champion of the underdogs, as well as keeping true to my vow of giving Hellgate: London some play-time before it’s potential demise on February 1, 2009, I gave the game its first go in a long time. My level 20 marksman, Traeginn, was last seen in Temple Station attempting his final two quests. One to kill the boss demon Oculis the All-Seeing, the other to speak to an NPC in Monument Station. However, the portal to Monument Station is tied to Oculis and that damned boss killed me quickly and repeatedly every time.

This time, the first two times I tried, once more he killed me quickly. Actually not so much him, but his Eyes of Oculis that have a very nasty spectral attack. Maybe I just need better armor — I never played enough last time to get a grip on Hellgate’s itemization — but even spamming Health Injectors they’d take Traeginn down in short order.

I took Traeginn into Angel Passage to pay Oculis a visit a third time with the intention of trying something different. All along I’d been using the special Cleanser weapon the whole time, which seemed to be the only weapon capable of damaging the enemies in Angel Passage. As it turns out, the Cleanser is only needed to kill all the boils that line the streets and walls. Anything other than a boil is vulnerable to normal weapons! D’oh! Well now, let’s see how Oculis and his eyes withstand my real guns!

Answer: not well at all! While the eyes still gave Traeginn one helluva time if they managed to get off their wide-range spectral attack, and I was spamming Health Injectors like they were candy, I was able to get them down in relatively short order and focus on Oculis when he phased into the corporeal world to vomit out more Eyes at me.

Finally! Traeginn is now level 21 and made it not only to Monument Station but the next station of Templar Base to continue his demon-slaying adventures someday. I actually had fun, but as usual this was all solo. Players are chatting but I’ve still been unable to get a group at all to see how the game plays with others.
