After nearly a year’s absence, I’ve been active on the AGE forums lately and signed up for last night’s L4D Game Night.

We ended up doing a Versus match which is actually not what I expected. What did I expect? No idea, honestly. In Versus mode you’re still playing the campaign. Assuming a full eight players, four of you are the Survivors trying to fight through all the zombies and get to the safe house. The other four are Special Infected. It seems to be random which one you are, I spent the majority of my time as a Hunter which was frustrating to learn the controls. On the final map of the night I did manage to get a few successful jumps. I was a Smoker twice I think, and I did get the Big Drag achievement for dragging a Survivor (my old Chromehounds AGE squad leader!) 100 feet with my tongue. In fact I think I had him so far away from the others that I managed to kill him before they got to me!

At the end of the round the teams switch sides, and after both teams have completed (or failed) that map it moves to the next map in the campaign.

It’s a very cool design and the Infected side can have quite a bit of strategy. You get to choose where you spawn, provided you’re far enough away that the Survivors cannot see your spawn point. Boomers walk slow so we preferred to have Boomers spawn in front of the Survivors, for example. At one of the scripted event scenes the Survivors hole themselves up in a house to have a better chance against the zombie horde. Infected can still enter the house during that time as well. Climbing up to the roof and going in through an upstairs window was fun, trying to sneak in while the Survivors were distracted with zombies. Those event scenes are also where a Tank will appear. One of the Infected is randomly chosen to become the Tank. When the tank comes, the Survivors run outside the house to have more maneuvering room. I was a Boomer at the time and we decided to have me hide outside until the Tank arrived to get the attention of the Survivors then I could step out and vomit on them, attracting an extra zombie horde. The trick worked wonderfully, too. Hilarious!

The other team had their revenge, though. While playing the Survivors we had a random bout of poor timing where we had a normal zombie horde coming at us. The Infected had two Hunters who jumped us simultaneously, leaving only two Survivors to fight the zombies and try to rescue the two pinned by Hunters. Then a Boomer steps out and vomits on us, attracting a second zombie horde. At that same instant one of them became a Tank who rushed in and slaughtered the four of us. We never stood a chance. But it was great fun anyway. Even losing that badly, nowhere near the safe house, that moment provided quite a bit of laughter from both teams.
