If this were the official Xbox forums I could title this post “z0mg Fallout 3 killed my 360!!1!”
Just as I’ve finally been able to start enjoying Fallout 3 (I’ve been spending the most time the past two weeks with Fallout 3 and GTA 4) my 360 locked up last night and displayed the dreaded “Red Ring of Death.” This is my second RRoD, the first one occurring in November ‘07. While I appreciate Microsoft admitting there is a problem with the original motherboard design and expanding the warranty to three years for the RRoD, they’ve mostly just been replacing the heat-warped innards with the same older versions and sending them back. It was only last month that Microsoft finally they would replace every RRoD unit with the newer “Jasper” motherboard with a new design and cooler-running GPU that has (so far) solved the problem.
I went to the Xbox Support site last night and immediately filled out a RRoD ticket so “the coffin” will be on its way today and hopefully I’ll have the new Jasper unit sometime next week or so.
My first RRoD I didn’t bother sending it in for a month or two because I wasn’t actively using the 360 at the time. Obviously now, I have been and this will be quite aggravating. It’s been unusually cold here the past couple weeks so I got into a routine of running Niko around Liberty City in the mornings while I snuggled up with some coffee, then in the evenings I’d relax before bed by cautiously sneaking through the rubble of the DC wastelands.
I wasn’t quite ready to make a return to PC gaming and MMOs just yet though…

And with Resi 5 next week. I guess I will have to mourn your loss, as I am killing Zombie like creatures and baddie bosses…oh my!
Cheers
Nah, unless they have changed the control scheme (and I already know they haven’t) I doubt I’ll be getting RE5 at all unless I end up with a bunch of XBL friends who want to co-op.
Dude! I feel your pain. Most likely you’ll get a refurb that is sitting on a shelf back at the service center…actually, with any luck, you’ll get my old unit lol. When you get your system back, We’ll get some Crackdown or L4D going. In the mean time, if you want to do some FPS PC games let me know, I’m up for that as well.
I actually broke down and played Frontlines on the PC last night but I doubt I’ll keep at it. It’s just too demanding on my system, and FPS suck with crappy framerate. COD4 isn’t much better, so that just leaves me with TF2 since for some reason my BF2142 keeps crashing to desktop as soon as I start it up, but no warning. I’m halfway wondering if it isn’t SP3-related? I miss 2142!
I’m definitely up for some Crackdown, though. There are several achievements I didn’t get yet and turns out I have to have the gangs active to jack a few cars. [Translation: you're hosting, LOL!]
No worries, I’ll host. lol Also, make sure you upgrade your graphic card drivers. That might becausing some of the issue with BF.
I’ve only had my 360 Elite a short time & I’m hoping that playing games from the hardrive will make the likelyhood of getting the ‘RRD’ less likely.
Hope your not without your 360 for too long.
It isn’t the DVD drive that causes the RROD it’s the GPU getting too hot and actually warps the motherboard, eventually opening a circuit causing the unit to cease functioning. The new Jasper chipset has a new design and cooler-running GPU to prevent this.
